Congratulations New Horizons!

New Horizons Patch

Congratulations to all our friends and colleagues that worked on the New Horizons project, past and present. Pluto Flyby was an amazing success. Our own Eric was supporting the ground system software during the flyby.

To honor the event, at a recent rehearsal, we only played songs with the word “moon” or “star” in their title: “Fly Me To The Moon,” “How High The Moon,” “Stardust,” “Stella By Starlight,” and “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars.” Unfortunately, there are no jazz standards about Pluto (maybe we should write one!). Alas, we did not have enough of a quorum to play at Plutopalooza – it would have been great!

New Music Day

New recordings from our 4/15 rehearsal are now posted on the Music page. I’ve also reorganized this playlist to a “Best Of” list, and keeping around some of the better songs that were previously posted on New Music Day. Enjoy!!

New Music Day

Happy Spring everyone! We recently recorded a rehearsal on April 8th, as we get ready for some upcoming gigs. Check out the songs on the Music page, including tunes by Sonny Rollins, Stanley Turrentine, Wayne Shorter, and Dizzy Gillespie.

We also made it to a milestone of sorts (not the song), as we played our 100th and 101th song in the band: Blue In Green by Miles Davis, and Afro Blue by Mongo Santamaria, made famous by John Coltrane in his album Live at Birdland.

New Music Day

Adam, Julius, Ralph, and I recently recorded a rehearsal on February 3. This was the first time we’ve played as a quartet without the horn section for awhile. Nothing fancy used for recording, just a Zoom H2n. We played “in the round” in an auditorium we often use for rehearsal, and set the Zoom to 4-channel mode. I cut the songs up using Audacity, and cleaned up the level balance a little using Reaper. But that’s it! This is our “live” quartet sound. Check out the three new songs on the Music page (Chitlins, Insensatez, and Stolen). Great solos on all three tracks. Somehow, Chitlins turned into a Latin-Funk tune.

Welcome to the New Website (and Happy Pi Day!)

pi-day

We are really excited about getting the new website up and running. There are still a few rough edges, but we’re generally open for business. Try to step over the boxes on the floor. And sorry that some of the shelves are empty. But we’re here, and we’re going to be here for awhile. So stop by often to check on our gigs calendar, or listen to some new music we’ve posted.

I find it fitting that we’ve opened the website for business on Pi Day, given we’re all a bunch of scientists and engineers that are also jazz musicians. So happy 3.1415927. Don’t forget to hug a scientist, engineer, physicist, or mathematician today :-).
